Open an embroidery file in three steps

  1. Choose a file or drop it on the page. The format is detected automatically.
  2. Pick a view: realistic stitches, plain stitches, lines with needle points, or one of the analyses.
  3. Press “Play” to follow the order in which the machine sews.

What the viewer shows

Size and stitch count
Width and height of the stitched area in millimetres, and the number of stitches. Check whether the design fits your hoop.
Colours and colour changes
Each thread colour with its stitch count, in the order of the file.
Jumps and trims
Jumps are moves without a needle entry. Most formats also store where the thread is trimmed, DST does not.
Needle density
Needle entries per square millimetre. Very dense areas can turn stiff or distort the fabric.
Pull density
Where long stitches and repeated coverage meet, so where the design pulls hardest on the fabric.
Direction rays
The main stitch direction in each area. Crosses mark mixed directions.

Supported embroidery formats

Every machine maker has its own format. They all store the same thing: needle positions, jumps and colour changes. They differ in colours and trims.

Edit embroidery files with Nuime Designer

The viewer shows what is in a file. To change it, use Nuime Designer, our embroidery software for Mac: open embroidery files as objects, move, rotate, mirror, swap colours, resize while keeping the stitch density and export as PES, DST, JEF or VP3. Your own SVG artwork turns into stitches.

Frequently asked questions

Is the embroidery file viewer free?

Yes. No account and no login. Files up to 10 MB can be opened.

Is my embroidery file uploaded?

No. The file is read only in your browser and never leaves your device. When you close the page, it is gone.

Which file formats can I open?

PES and PEC (Brother, Baby Lock), DST (Tajima), JEF (Janome), VP3 (Husqvarna Viking, Pfaff), EXP (Melco, Bernina), XXX (Singer) and HUS (Husqvarna Viking). Formats such as ART or EMB, which only their maker’s software opens, are not supported.

Why do the colours look different from my thread?

PEC, JEF, HUS and older PES files refer to a machine maker’s colour palette, not your actual thread. Newer PES files, VP3 and XXX store thread colours, which are only as accurate as whoever made the file entered them. DST and EXP store no colours at all, so the viewer shows placeholders. You can set the fabric colour in the background yourself.

Does the viewer work on a phone?

Yes, it runs in the browser on phones, tablets and computers. On a phone, pick the file with “Choose file”.

Can I edit or convert the file?

The viewer only displays the file. You can edit it with Nuime Designer, our embroidery software for Mac: open embroidery files as objects, move, rotate, swap colours, resize while keeping the stitch density and export as PES, DST, JEF or VP3. More about Nuime Designer

Does the preview replace a test sew-out?

No. The preview shows the needle positions in the file. How the design looks on your fabric depends on fabric, stabilizer, thread and machine. Sew a test piece first.
